TIRUCHI: In yet another initiative aimed at rehabilitating prisoners lodged in the Central Prison here, the jail authorities have planned to impart one-month training in hairdressing to a select group of life convicts.
A hairdressing training centre, established at a cost of Rs. One lakh inside the prison. was inaugurated on Saturday by the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Tiruchi Range, B.M. Ezra.
A government-appointed hairdresser will train 10 life convicts who evinced interest in learning the profession. The training will continue in batches.
Prison authorities said that only life convicts had been handpicked since they were the ones to spend longer period in jail. Many vocational programmes were being conducted for inmates, aimed at their rehabilitation, the Superintendent of Prisons, N. Sekar, said. Mr. Sekar said that training was being imparted to about 50 prisoners in plumbing. Certificates would be given to the inmates from a government Industrial Technical Institute after they clear the exam.
Similarly, training in washing soap manufacture was being imparted to 20 inmates, and computer training for 50.
