Sangareddy: A blast in the Gummadidala-based Siris crop sciences pesticide manufacturing unit ripped apart a four-storey shed on Sunday.
However, no one was hurt.
Sources said the highly inflammable xylene, a by-product of isopropane, caught fire while the product was put to washing. The accident occurred around 9.15 a.m. The flames could be brought under control only by afternoon. The flames and the resultant smoke engulfed many villages in the six-kilometre radius.
Villagers shifted
Residents of the nearby Mambapur vacated their houses and were moved to safer places.A few residents of Gummadidala also took shelter in the neighbouring villages and returned only after the fire was put out. Fifteen fire tenders from industries in Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, Sadashivpet, Sangareddy, Medak and the IAF Academy in Dundigal were summoned to fight the fire.
The industrial safety team, led by Chandramohan, reached the spot and supervised the fire control operation. Speaking to The Hindu on phone, Mr. Chandramohan said the fire was caused by a reaction in Xylene.
