Overseas buyers agree to hike price of commodities Exporters approach Union Ministry of Commerce Thiruvananthapuram: The export of fresh fruits and vegetables to various destinations in the Gulf from three airports of the State, which had come to a standstill, will resume on Sunday midnight. The exporters based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Karipur airports suspended the shipments from Friday midnight in view of the severe financial crisis due to the steep fall in dollar and appreciation of rupee, and spiralling price of perishables in the local market. Only frozen fish to Zurich and live plants to Europe were exported through the three airports since Friday midnight. The airlines have incurred a loss of Rs.85 lakh. Secretary, Agricultural Products and Processed Food Exporters Association (APPEXA), Dil Koshy said export to the Gulf would resume on Sunday midnight following the assurance from overseas buyers in the Gulf that they were ready to increase the price of the commodities. Cargo space had been booked on all flights departing after Sunday midnight. The exporters approached the Union Ministry of Commerce and various airlines to reduce the freight rates that are on the higher side. Of the estimated 80 tonnes of fresh fruits and vegetables exported on daily from the three airports, 60 tonnes is exported from Thiruvananthapuram, 15 tonnes from Kochi and nearly 10 tonnes from Kozhikode. The country earns Rs.200 crore as annual foreign exchange from the export of vegetables and fruits.
