100-year-old folk medicine expert among Rajyotsava award winners

BANGALORE: The Government has selected 51 persons for the Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava Award 2007.

They include the Davangere-based 100-year-old folk medicine expert Ghaini Lal Singh Jamkar, the Mysore-based nonagenarian Sanskrit scholar and an authority on Rig Veda G.N. Chakravarthy, the Bangalore-based octogenarian scholar K.T. Pandurangi, writer and granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi Sumitra Gandhi Kulkarni, film artiste and former Minister Anant Nag, and film producer Parvathamma Rajkumar.

Announcing the awards, Secretary, Kannada and Culture, I.M. Vittal Murthy told presspersons here on Monday that Governor Rameshwar Thakur had cleared the 51 names.

The names had been recommended and selected on the basis of merit, age and achievements, he added. Mr. Thakur will present the awards at 6.30 p.m. on November 1 at the Ravindra Kalakshetra here.

On the programmes that were to mark the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, Mr. Vittal Murthy said that a Suvarna Karnataka Kannada Sammelan would be held soon after the elected Government comes into force.

The other award winners in the respective categories are — Literature: C.N. Ramachandra (Mysore), G. Srinivasa Raju (Chikkaballapur) and M.N. Javariah (Mysore). Theatre: Lad Saheb Aminghada (Bellary) and Sarojamma P. Dhuttarigi (Koppal). Music: Sheshappa Gabbur (Raichur), Basappa H. Bhajantri (Bagalkot) and Gauranga Kodikal (Bangalore). Dance: Master Vittal Shetty (Mangalore), Gita Datar (Shimoga).

Folk Arts: Savantramma Sabanna Sunnagara (Gulbarga), Honnamma (Bangalore Rural), Syad Sab Ladkhan, Machar Gopala Naik (Dakshina Kannada). Yakshagana: Seenappa Bhandari (Dakshina Kannada). Fine Arts: M.R. Balekayi (Dharwad). Sculpture: S. Shankaranarayanacharya (Kolar). Cinema: Suresh Urs (now based in Chennai).

Journalism: T.J.S. George (Bangalore), Sarjoo Katkar (Belgaum), Cartoonist Ponnappa (Kodagu) and Abdul Khaliq (Bangalore). Agriculture: Bharamagowda (Gulbarga). Medicine: H.K. Nagaraj (Bangalore Rural), Sharan Shivraj Patil (Bangalore), K.V. Devadiga (Dakshina Kannada) and Rajan Deshpande (Hubli). Education: Chennabasappa Halahalli (Bidar), B.N. Brahmacharya (Bangalore) and K. Balaveera Reddy (Bangalore). Environment: Nagesh Hegde (Uttara Kannada), Science: G.T. Narayana Rao (Mysore) and P.K. Shetty (Bangalore).

Horanada Kannadigas: H.Y. Rajagopal (United States) and Shekhar Babushetty (Udupi). Sports: Pankaj Advani (Bangalore) and B.C. Suresh ( Ramnagaram), Social Service: G. Shankar Family Trust (Udupi), YMS Sharma (Bangalore), M.G. Bopayya (Bangalore), T.V. Narayana Shastry (Shimoga) and Mulchand Nahar (Bangalore). Research: A. Sundar (Shimoga), D.N.
