Delhi has a date with France

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: Alliance Française de Delhi is celebrating 50 years of its success with a variety of events spread over a week at its Lodhi Estate premises here.

Professionals and amateurs, students of the Alliance and celebrities will come together to act, sing, paint and model to commemorate the founding of Alliance Française in the country.

The opening ceremony of the festival on Monday was coordinated by Naresh Kapuria. The theme was “The Magic Brush” in which dancers enthralled the gathering with a scintillating performance.

An art exhibition, “Artists at Work”, also opened in the evening. The three-day exhibition features art works by guest artists of the art camp and sculptures of French modern visual artist Yom. To express his ideas, Yom uses symbols -- circles, squares, spheres and cubes – which when combined define a language. Indian and French guest artists will create their works of art. And their pieces of art will be on display and sale.

To celebrate 50 years of Indo-French collaboration, Alliance Française will stage a light comedy on Wednesday. Titled Egalité (Deuce), the one-act play will be directed by Raman Chawla and S. Somasundaram. It will feature some of Delhi’s most colourful and renowned personalities in its cast.

Set in a party, the play revolves round four young characters, all searching for an ideal. Chloe, a young French filmmaker, wants to live and work in India where she feels closer to “reality”. Similarly Bob, a struggling French poet, feels that India holds the inspiration for his writing. At the other end, Diya and Arnab have dreams of living in France.

“Students’ Fest” featuring talented singers will be held on November 3, while “Love is in the Air” will be held on November 4.

Exploring the joy of singing in polyphony through songs from the French and international repertoire will be the choral ensemble “AF Golden Jubilee Choir” on November 4. From a panorama of the history of French fashion through the art of painting, AFD will zoom in on Indian couture and host a show called “Fashion Mode” on November 6.
