THENI: Loans to the tune of Rs.1.5 crore were disbursed to 200 students to help them pursue higher education at a special education loan mela jointly organised by all bankers at Bodinaykkanur near here on Tuesday. Disbursing the loan amount to students, the Collector, Har Sahay Meena, said that the mela was organised to offer loans to all eligible beneficiaries. All bankers assembled at one place to cater to the financial needs of meritorious students. Such a common loan mela was very useful to students pursuing professional courses, including engineering, medical and management degrees. Bankers have sanctioned educational loan to 900 students so far against the half yearly target of 656 students. Canara Bank Periakulam branch alone sanctioned loans to 100 students, he added. Briefing the performance of banks in other areas, the Collector said that Canara Bank branches at Bodinayakkanur, Erasakkanaickanur and Goodalur branches completed financial inclusion in their service area. People in Agamalai and Manjalar dam area have also been brought under the financial inclusion scheme. Bodi branch has opened 1,207 savings bank accounts in children’s name with a guarantee of offering education loan to them in the future, he pointed out. He also appealed to students, who were eligible get scholarship or any assistance, studying in 14 colleges in the district to open savings bank ‘No Frill’ account in any one of the banks to speed up financial inclusion process. Bankers should conduct a survey in the district that has 2.73 households to identify those families that did have bank accounts. Canara Bank has already launched the Canara Gramin Vikas Vahini scheme to take financial inclusion and other banking schemes to the doorsteps of villagers, he pointed out. 97 branchesTheni district has 97 branches including 28 in rural areas and 69 in semi-urban areas. Nine nationalised banks have been operating 52 branches. Each branch has been catering to the banking needs of 11,000 people.
