MADURAI: The United Nations has awarded Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) with a special consultative status with its Economic and Social Council, said Major General L.K. Gupta (Retd.), Head of the Chapters Division, INTACH. It was awarded in recognition of the efforts of INTACH in promoting public awareness on the need to preserve natural and cultural heritage, he said and added that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) too had acknowledged INTACH projects. MoU signedThe non-profit non-Governmental organisation had also signed a memorandum of understanding with AusHeritage, Australia’s peak heritage network to collaborate on various initiatives. It would facilitate AusHeritage and INTACH to work together more closely in South Asian and South East Asia, said Mr. Gupta. With funds mobilised by its international chapters in Belgium, United Kingdom and United States of America, the INTACH was able to take up various projects in the country to restore, conserve and protect historical structures and heritage precincts, he said. Orissa modelEncouraged by the impressive work of INTACH in creating the heritage village of artists at Raghurajpur, the Government of Orissa had given permission to create another five such villages in the State, he said highlighting several projects taken up by the organisation in the country, including the restoration and conservation of the Reis Magos Fort in Goa.
