Proposed uniform syllabus should be on a par with CBSE: Viswanathan

Special Correspondent

State will lag behind if such a syllabus is not adopted, says VITU Chancellor

IN RECOGNITION: G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT University (centre), being presented with the ‘Kalvi Kalai Vendhar’ award at Nallurpettai, Gudiyatham on Monday. G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore and V.P. Narayanan, former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, are in the picture.

GUDIYATHAM: The uniform syllabus proposed to be introduced by the Tamil Nadu government should be on a par with that of the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), according to G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT University.

He was speaking at a function jointly organised by the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) of the Government Higher Secondary School, Nallurpettai (his alma mater), the forum of the 1955 batch golden jubilee year students of the school, the Rotary Club of Gudiyatham and the Lions Club of Gudiyatham here on Monday to honour him for having developed the VITU as one among the best universities in India.

Mr. Viswanathan said that candidates from Tamil Nadu were unable to get admission in reputed institutions such as the IIT and the Birla Institute of Science and Technology (BITS) Pilani since the State Board syllabus was not equal to that of the CBSE whose syllabus is adopted by these institutions for their entrance examinations. Tamil Nadu would be lagging behind other States if it did not adopt a syllabus, which was on a par with that of the CBSE, he said.

Mr. Viswanathan said that while tremendous employment opportunities were available in India, there were not enough candidates to meet the requirements of the job market. This is because of the poor standards of government schools, which resulted in the low percentage of candidates going in for higher education. The Central and State governments and the University Grants Commission should take steps to improve the standards of the government schools, he said.

G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore said that one of the problems faced by India on the educational front was that the number of students in higher education is not commensurate to the population of youth in relevant age group of 18-25 years. Only seven per cent of the relevant age group go in for higher education in India as against 20 per cent in China. While on the one hand, there are institutions, which have the best infrastructure, on the other, there were still institutions which did not have qualified and adequate teachers. This dualism should be avoided, he said.

V.P. Narayanan, former Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University said that Mr. Viswanathan who had humble beginnings in a village near Gudiyatham rose to establish a university of international standards owing to hard work.

Title conferred

Dr. Thiruvasagam conferred on Mr. Viswanathan the ‘Kalvi Kalai Vendhar’ award for his outstanding contribution to education. Mr. Viswanathan honoured his school teachers, Pattu Ranganathan and S. Ramamoorthy, with shawls and shields. V. Padhumanar, secretary, 1955 Students Forum welcomed the gathering. M.G. Amirthalingam, Correspondent, National Higher Secondary School, V.G. Dhanapal, former MLA, and M.M. Sivagnanam, president of PTA spoke.
