VIZIANAGARAM: A large number of BPL families led by CPI secretary P. Kameswara Rao and CPI(M) divisional secretary Reddy Sankara Rao and Anganwadis led by M. Uma Maheswari , district general secretary of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, staged dharnas and rasta-rokos at the Collectorate separately on Monday.
Anganwadi workers protested against the reported decision of the Government to hand over responsibility of nutritious food distribution in ICDS projects to private agencies and demanded that the proposal be dropped forthwith. They also demanded promotions to qualified ayahs and houses to anganwadi teachers.
In the other camp, addressing the poor, Mr. Kameswara Rao and M. Suryanarayana, CPI(M) executive committee member, criticised the State Government for suppressing their movement on house-sites to the poor.
Citing irregularities in the allotment of houses to BPL families in identified ‘Indiramma’ model villages in the first and second phases, the CPI leader asked whether Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Minister for Housing Botsa Satyanarayana were prepared to pay the announced sum of Rs. 1,000 for each irregularity pointed out by the parties in the district. He said the party had already prepared the list of ineligible beneficiaries who mostly belong to the Congress.
Memo submitted
Mr. Suryanarayana of CPI(M) appealed to the Housing Minister to rectify irregularities and also include the BPL families living on outskirts of municipalities under the programme. Later, they submitted a memorandum to DRO P.A. Sobha.
