Delhi Govt. enhances benefits for girl child

Staff Reporter

Step aims at eliminating gender disparity

To provide pension to 1984 riot victims

Increase pay of public health nurses

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government has cleared a proposal for enhancement of financial benefits for the girl child with the aim of overcoming the declining child sex ratio.

It has also decided to set up a Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights, implement rehabilitation package of the Prime Minister for victims of the 1984 riots, and increase the pay scales of public health nurses in the Capital.

At a meeting on Monday, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said her Government was concerned about the decline in child sex ratio. “An amount of Rs.1 lakh instead of Rs.18,000 would be redeemable on attaining the age of 18 years and this will help in stage-wise empowerment of the girl child. The liberalised benefits would come into force from January 1, 2008, while benefits relating to education of the girl child would be implemented from the academic session 2008-09.”

The Chief Minister said the deposit of Rs.5,000 in the name of each girl child born in Government or local civic body hospitals would be increased to Rs.6,000 while an amount of Rs.4,000 would be granted on the birth of a girl child at home.

Ms. Dikshit said that with the implementation of enhanced financial benefits for the girl child under the “Ladli Scheme”, the city government would be able to eliminate gender disparity in elementary schooling and reduce infant mortality rate.

The Delhi Commission for Child Rights would consist of a chairperson and six members and review safeguards provided under the law for protection of child rights and also recommend measures for their effective implementation.

The Government will also provide a rehabilitation grant and pension to the victims of the 1984 riots in keeping with the Prime Minister’s rehabilitation package.

An increase in the pay scale of public health nurses from the present Rs.5,000-8,000 to Rs.5,500-9,000 to bring it at par with prevalent Union Government scale is also on the cards.
