Calling attention: TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu on a bullock-cart during a road show at Ramagundam in Karimnagar district on Monday. RAMAGUNDAM (KARIMNAGAR DT): TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday flayed the AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for not visiting the State to console the bereaved families of farmers, who committed suicide as they did not get minimum support price for their produce. Addressing a press conference before launching his road show demanding MSP of Rs. 1,000 per quintal for paddy here on Monday, Mr. Naidu charged that the AICC president had visited the Anantapur district when in Opposition and shed crocodile tears for the welfare of farming community by distributing some compensation to the bereaved families. Wrong figuresHe alleged that the Congress party had blamed the TDP Government over the farmers’ suicides by showing wrong figures. “Now, over 4,500 farmers had committed suicide in various parts of the State during the past three years because of MSP issue and increase in the production cost. But, the UPA chairperson was neglecting the plight of farmers and not visiting the State to console the families and take necessary measures to stop the suicides”, he maintained. He said that the farmers have lost more than Rs. 18,000 crore because of this. Crop failureReferring to the prevailing weather conditions, he said that cotton farmers lost their precious crop with the rain and floods shattering their dreams of a big harvest. He expressed fear that suicides among cotton farmers were likely to rise due to failure of crop in some parts of the State. He alleged that all farmers growing maize, cotton, sugarcane, turmeric were in distress due to lack of MSP. He charged that the State Government was neglecting the farm sector. He also remarked that Chief Minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy was terming agriculture as waste and swindling public money in the name of Jalayagnam. He alleged that the State Government had failed to control fake seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and black marketing to protect the interests of the farmer. Flaying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not providing MSP for paddy, he charged that the Prime Minister does not know the problems of paddy farmers. “He (Mr. Singh) is showing growth rate of the country only on papers”, he noted. The Telugu Desam president demanded the Union Government to implement the Swaminathan Committee report and protect the interests of the farmers.
