GUNTUR: Increasing number of women facing menstrual problems are availing of the health care facilities in the district, reports a survey conducted by International Institute of Population Studies.
The IIPS, a Mumbai based independent organisation conducted an end line survey in 2007 among men and women to determine the efficacy of the various awareness programmes implemented under Coordinated HIV/AIDS Response through Capacity Building and Awareness (CHARCA), a UNICEF aided project since July 2004. The findings based on random end line survey conducted on 417 women across the district pointed out that 72 per cent of women suffering with menstrual problems were visiting private hospitals, while 38 per cent prefer government hospitals. The percentage of women in villages visiting faith healers has come down from 3.4 per cent to 1.9 per cent, while those seeking home remedies have also come down from 16.9 per cent to 8 per cent. “The survey figures point out that there has been increasing awareness on various menstrual problems among women. Women in villages are now coming forward to avail better medical facilities,” CHARCA project director M. Rajasekhar said on Monday.
Among the other heartening features of the survey, were more number of women were utilising the services of peer educators and treat them as health care professionals.
The end line survey pointed out that condom usage has gone up from 9.7 per cent in 2004 to 91.4 per cent in 2007, awareness about adverse impact on health of having sex with multiple partners has increased from 16.7 per cent to 91 per cent.
