Camaraderie: CITU all India president M.K. Pandhe being greeted by Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Director (operation) P.K. Mishra at a national seminar conducted by Steel Plant Employees’ Union in Visakhapatnam on Monday. VISAKHAPATNAM: Making a fervent appeal for granting of captive iron ore mines to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, CITU all-India president M.K. Pandhe on Monday said the Centre should evolve a national policy on utilisation of mineral reserves and consider a ban on export of iron ores. “If the reserves are properly harnessed, the future of VSP will be bright,” he told a national seminar on ‘Raw material problem – future of Vizag Steel,’ conducted here at Ukkunagaram by Steel Plant Employees’ Union (SPEU). Mr. Pandhe said there should be a debate on mining policy and felt that the potential of Vizag Steel was under-explored due to denial of mining lease to extract iron ore in Prakasam district and other States. He said even the Bhilai Steel Plant was poised to face raw material shortage and demanded that there should be ban on export of iron ore.Questioning the rationale behind exporting high-grade iron ore, he said Vizag Steel would need more iron ore as well as other minerals and it was the responsibility of the Centre to ensure raw material linkage. VSP Director (operations) P.K. Mishra as of now there was no raw material shortage as they had tied up with National Mineral Development Corporation for supply for next four to five years to complete its first phase of expansion. However, he felt that the VSP was facing the music by spending more on raw material as it had no captive mines like SAIL and TISCO. He said the problem aggravated with China going on a massive expansion of steel production. Collective effortSPEU general secretary N. Rama Rao said there should be a collective approach to get captive mines for VSP and described as a raw deal the rejection of applications for mining leases in Prakasam district, Orissa and Chattisgarh. Bhadrachalam MP M. Babu Rao, VSP Directors Y. Manohar (personnel), C.G. Patil (commercial), SAIL General Manager (raw material) Raghavendra Gupta, Steel Workers Federation of India president A. Dakshi, CITU district general secretary A. Ajay Sarma, SPEU working president Y.T. Das and honorary president V. Dhanaraju were present.
