Winning culture must, says Abid Ali

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Consistency and winning culture has to be there, feels former Indian Test player Syed Abid Ali who is back with Andhra team as its coach after two seasons and is keen to see team do well again.

During his last stint, Abid Ali was able to enhance the team’s reputation and at one stage it appeared that it will make the knockout.

This season, after a one-month camp for the Ranji probables at the ACA-VDCA stadium, he exuded confidence that it should do well.

“Speed, strength and agility have improved and the only draw back is the running in between the wickets”.

His son Farquee Ali who has done coaching course in the US and is now assistant coach to Andhra team, is working on this aspect.

Before coming here, Abid Ali was looking for fitness of the team and fielding, which were very good now.

Pick-up, accuracy and underarm throw were so good that the wicketkeeper need not move much while receiving the throw.

Consistency is a vital aspect and he is talking to the players about its importance. Just once performance was not sufficient and every one should understand his role must contribute his bit in every game.

Mental game

Cricket is a mental game and one should be able to read the match situation and play accordingly, he says.

Abid Ali was also not worried that the team was without Y. Venugopala Rao and S. Sahabuddin (the first opted to play for Maharashtra and the latter joined Indian Cricket League).

“We can’t worry about what we have lost.

But the team should carry on the good work done by them”.

It is also necessary to perform well in a match after doing well at the camp.

“The hard work done at the camp cannot be left there; it must be carried to the middle”, he said.

He was pleased with the medium pacers Vijaya Kumar who has good pace, line and length, Israel Raju and of course, the tested Kalyan Krishna. Trajectory and line and length of spinners Shankara Rao, Vatekar and Faiq are improving.
