This Day That Age
Addressing the delegates to the 19th International Red Cross Conference in New Delhi on October 28 Prime Minister Nehru appealed to them to consider how best the Red Cross could function in the present age of cold war. The old approach of waiting for war to come and then seeking to mitigate its evils was hardly adequate at the present time, he declared. Modern war might mean destruction on a terrific scale and nothing might be felt to be safe, he said. The U.N. Charter, he pointed out, rightly declared that war began in the minds of men and the Red Cross must therefore evolve some way to deal with the tormented spirit of man wherein germinate thoughts of war. Mr. Nehru was emphatic that this cold war approach has not led to any useful results in the past nor would it do so in the future.
