Letters to the Editor
The gruesome killing of 18 persons, including the son of the former Jharkhand Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi, by naxalites in the Chikhadia village of Jharkhand is shocking. It is not known how the police, who were well aware of the threat to the life of Nunulal, brother of Mr. Marandi, could withdraw from the programme in which he was participating. The Maoists who claim that they target only class enemies, and not civilians, are increasingly killing innocent civilians. Effective steps need to be taken by both the Centre and the State governments to curb naxalite activities. S. Balu Samy, Chennai How long does the country propose to tolerate such brutal acts by naxalites? The terming of the naxal problem as socio-economic by some and the misplaced sympathy for the naxalites have emboldened them to pursue their campaign of terror and destruction. It is evident that they are not fighting for the people and do not care for the lives of the poor. The need of the hour is action to eliminate the scourge of naxalism once and for all. J. Suganthi, Lalgudi The gunning down of 18 people while a cultural programme was on reminds one of the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre. General Dyer blocked the exit points of the park and opened fire on the innocent people who had gathered to attend a festival. But in 1919, it was the British who suppressed us whereas now, it is the inept governance of our own rulers that has robbed the people of their happiness and peace. S. Ramakrishnasayee, Ranipet
