IT revolution & dowry

This refers to the article “IT revolution and declining dowry practice” (Open Page, Oct. 28). The IT revolution has no doubt paved the way for increasing preference for brides earning high salaries, who bring in handsome dowry every month. We should be honest enough to admit that the twin evils of dowry and caste are sure to exist as long as we continue to patronise the arranged marriage system. Caste and money are the primary considerations in arranged marriages.

The IT revolution has led not only to a decline in dowry due to inter-caste marriages but also to an increase in the number of marriages between young men and women belonging to different States.

At the same time, we cannot overlook the fact the hefty pay packages have transformed the lifestyle of the young. They have eroded the good old traditional values.
