VISAKHAPATNAM: The seventh annual ‘Helping Hands Mela 2007’ opened at the HSBC Bank premises at Waltair Uplands near Sampath Vinayak temple on Monday. The mela was formally inaugurated by a customer in presence of officers and staff of the bank and representatives of participating NGO s.

A wide range of churidhars, shirting, dress materials and other products made by children of BCT (Bhagavathula Charitable Trust) farm at Haripalem village near Yelamanchili in the district and the Mahila Action (NGO) group are on display at the expo.

Fashion designer Madhu Tugnaid who has been involved with the BCT for the last two years, said that the children were showing promise and was optimistic that they could develop into good designers. The unique designs on khadi and handloom materials are attractive to say the least and reflect the skills of the trainees.

“The products are being marketed in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Delhi besides Visakhapatnam. We (BCT) plan to reach out to more and more people soon. Recently, we have started training in embroidery to some physically handicapped children of the village,” she said.

Long skirts, minis and tops in different hues and shapes welcome visitors to the stall set up by Mahila Action. “We train young girls from under-privileged families in apparel designing.

The beneficiaries are selected by Mahila Action,” says Pratima, a designer and member of the NGO. There are also some terracotta products, decorative jute items and handicrafts made by poor people from slums.

The proceeds from the sales at the exhibition will go towards supporting a charitable cause where the NGO has a presence. Apart from customers of HSBC, general public can also visit the exhibition and contribute to the noble cause by purchasing the products.

The expo will be on till November 3.
