Unscheduled stop

The stretch between Puthur Four Roads and Thillai Nagar on Thennur High Road is always congested. The bus stop after Puthur Four Road is Tennur (fund office). But most of the buses make unscheduled halt near the Anjaneyar temple between Puthur and Pattabiram Pillai street corner. It is makes the situation worse. Hence, traffic authorities may instruct the bus crew to halt only at scheduled stops to avoid traffic congestion.

“Revise deposit”

Residents of flats on West Adayavalanjan Street of Srirangam submitted a plea to the government and the Tiruchi Corporation in 2004 that the deposit of Rs.6000 collected per flat for underground drainage was un-reasonable. It is about three years now and neither the Corporation nor the government seemed to have acted on the plea. Recently, the residents of the flats were individually served demand notice asking them to remit the deposit within three days. I request the Corporation authorities to examine the representation and revise the demand for deposit as Rs.6,000 per apartment as a whole instead of Rs.6,000 for each of the flats.

New RTO office

The decision to open a branch of the regional transport office at Tiruverumbur for the benefit of residents of Tiruchi eastern region is quite welcome. The authorities must clarify whether the residents of the areas, having transactions with the RTO at the present place, will have to contact the old office or the new one at Tiruverumbur?

Inadequate bus service

Nathamadipatti, Thirunagar, Ponnaripuram and Adaikala Annai Nagar, which come under Thiruverumbur panchayat, are thickly populated residential areas. At present, a couple of private and TNSTC buses cater to the needs of the residents. But the bus service is inadequate. Commuters are exploited by both auto drivers and share auto drivers. If a sufficient number of mini-buses are introduced between Nathamadipatti and Central Bus Stand via Thirunagar, Ponnaripuram, Ponmalaipatti, Kottapattu and EVR College, it will be a boon to the residents.

Dimmer light

The use of dimmer light while riding on two-wheeler or four-wheeler has come down. No black mark in the middle of the headlight is also seen. Because of the bright light, those travelling from the opposite side are not able to see the road properly. Accidents occur because of this. RTO authorities must make use of dimmer light in all vehicles compulsory. Defaulters must be punished.

Garbage menace

North Andar Street is a residential area. There is a hotel where about 800/1,000 people take their lunch and about 300, dinner. All used plantain leaves and left over food are dumped in the dust bin. Apart from this, there is a hotel, tender coconut vendor, a fruit juice shop, which also dump their garbage in the same dust bin. Residents of the area cannot use the bin, as it is overflowing. Garbage is strewn around. The Corporation should arrange a separate trip to collect garbage from the hotels and collect appropriate charges. If such an arrangement already exists, it is not implemented in the area. Will the Corporation authorities look into this?

Lack of connectivity

TNSTC loses revenue to private bus operators in the city mainly due to the unpredictable timings of its bus service. Another reason for the loss of revenue is the lack of connectivity to important places such as Junction, Central Bus Stand, Chatram and even Srirangam from various residential localities. The TNSTC authorities should streamline the city bus services.

Caution signal missing

I would like to draw the RTO’s attention to the missing caution signals at the Thiruvanaikoil railway over bridge stretch. The over bridge and the road on either side is narrow. The caution boards put up by the RTO authorities, which were available previously is missing. I request the RTO to immediately take steps to provide the warning boards again to prevent road accidents.

Laudable gesture

We claim to follow the British system of parliament democracy. But we see the sorry spectacle of politicians in their 70s and 80s hold positions of high offices ineffectively. At the Liberal Democrats conference in Brighton, United Kingdom, which I attended in my personal capacity, I saw a healthy and former winner of the relay race in Olympics, Mr. Campbell, told to vacate the leadership. He resigned immediately without even a media announcement, making way for a younger man. All Prime Ministers in Britain in recent times are in the 50s and highly qualified and eminently suitable for the post. I wonder when India will attempt such a political transformation.

Flood threat

Monsoon has already set in. Due to copious rain in catchments areas, there is considerable flow of water in to the Mettur Dam. It is customary on the part of the government to think frantically at the 11th hour and make some efforts to contain the threat of flood when it looms large. Encroachments on river bunds, obstructing the water flow, are still there.

Problems such as desilting, deepening storm water drainage canals and strengthening weak river bunds are yet to be addressed seriously and sincerely.

It is better if such steps are taken up with full vigour now before it becomes too late.

Dalmiapuram Gannesan,

Srirangam

Only deterrant

Nowadays theft and robbery have become common. Imposition of severe punishment and huge fine on the offenders is the only solution. Minor punishment such as two to three months imprisonment is not enough. Also, patrolling must be introduced both during day and night.
