Collector says permit regulations were violated North railway station to have pre-paid counter KOCHI: A Road Transport Authority (RTA) meeting held on Monday decided to cancel the permit of 54 autorickshaws allowed to operate from the pre-paid counter of the south railway station. The decision follows breach of permit regulations, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, who chairs the authority, said. This will reduce the number of permits from the 200 issued at the time of launch of the pre-paid counter. The permit regulations stipulate that these autorickshaws should operate only from the pre-paid counter. However, many of them were found operating from elsewhere in the city and suburbs. The operators at fault were pulled up earlier. They were asked to give explanations and appear before the authority. The permits were cancelled, as the explanations were not satisfactory and they did not turn up before the authority. Motor Vehicles Department officials said these autorickshaws operated from the pre-paid counters only on a few occasions. None of their owners had paid the Rs. 750 due to the Railways every six months. “Their vacancies will be filled with autos which are willing to abide by our norms. Apart from ensuring that passengers are not overcharged, our aim is to assure them a safe ride,” they said. The Collector said a pre-paid counter would be launched at the north railway station. In the first phase, 200 permits would be issued.
