Buddhadeb wants CRPF deployed

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Monday that there could be no alternative to a political solution to the Nandigram issue. There should be a “political will for a political solution to a political question,” to bring about peace in Nandigram, which has remained troubled for more than 10 months.

But in view of the recent escalation in violence that had claimed four lives since Saturday, he spoke to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for the deployment of the Central Reserve Police Force in the area. The request had not been considered as yet, Mr. Bhattacharjee said.

“It is not a question of administrative intervention, nor that of the police or the military. I do not want a repeat of the March 14 situation when the police had to enter the area with the minimum objective of setting up camps there. So, I renew my appeal to concerned political parties to sit for talks and sort out a problem which is difficult to solve taking recourse to the police machinery,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said.

He dismissed as “baseless” the allegation by the Trinamool leadership that bullets were fired on a convoy in which the party leader Mamata Banerjee was travelling.
