Four ‘recce’ suspects brought to Mumbai

Mumbai: Police on Monday started verifying the antecedents of the four persons, including a woman, who were brought here from Surat, where they were detained as suspects for having carried out a ‘recce’ of the city a few days ago.

“We have brought them this morning and are currently verifying if they are the same ones. They were detained by the Surat railway police on October 26, after a common man alerted them about their similar physical attributes to the sketches of the suspects released by the Mumbai police,” Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad’s ACP Subodh Jaiswal said here.

Based upon the description provided by a taxi driver, who drove them to the sensitive spots, the city police had on Friday issued sketches of three terror suspects.

The cab driver had said that the four of his passengers, including a burqua-clad woman, were speaking in hushed voices in a “Kashmiri” accent of Hindi.

“The detainees claim to be from Lucknow but we have to ascertain it. We have also called the driver to verify if they are the same ones,” Mr. Jaiswal said.

He added the ATS was recording their statements and would verify the stories being told by them.

“They are currently under detention and depending upon the verification, will be arrested if need be.” — PTI
