BEFORE ENTERING SERVICE: Lamps lit by nursing students at the 16th Lamp Lighting ceremony at Mother Theresa Institute of Health Sciences in Puducherry on Tuesday. PUDUCHERRY: The government will take steps to sanction funds for the construction of a hostel for nursing students of the Mother Theresa Institute of Health Sciences (MTIHS), Rakesh Bihari, Chief Secretary, said on Tuesday. He made this observation at the 16th Lamp Lighting ceremony of the institute. In his address, Dilip Kumar Baliga, Director, Health and Family Welfare Services, said the role of nurses has changed in the globalised world. Earlier, nursing was not considered a part of the medical profession and nurses were only to provide succor to the ill. But now nurses must combine two roles that of a consoler and a medical professional. MTIHS Dean V. Balu said around 75 students had been put up in the nurses’ hostel next to the Government General Hospital and in other government and private hostels. “We have identified the land for the hostel and the building plan has been approved but there are insufficient funds. The moment we get funds, we can start construction,” he added. K. Lalitha, Additional Professor from NIMHANS, Bangalore, spoke about how Florence Nightingale served patients in the Crimean War. A total of 79 first year B. Sc Nursing and 12 other students, who will go on to become mid-wives and nurses, took part in the Lamp Lighting ceremony.
