Guntur
A view of the main guesthouse of Acharya Nagarjuna University. — GUNTUR: Abandoned quarters of Acharya Nagarjuna University will finally be put to use for academic experiments as none of the professors, readers or lecturers are occupying them. The university campus located some 15 km from Vijayawada and Guntur and 25 km from Tenali has a large number of quarters for all categories of teaching faculty. But, a majority of them settled in these towns prefer not to stay here. Vice-Chancellor V. Balamohandas has come up with an idea to put these vacant quarters to use and help students of Master of Travel and Tourism Management get some practical experience. Ironically, to accommodate the convenience of students and staff, the university starts functioning only from 11 a.m. and buses leave the campus at 5 p.m. Academic classes begin at 8 a.m. in majority of the universities providing enough time to both students and faculty to interact and concentrate on studies. Successive Vice-Chancellor tired to shift the teaching faculty to the campus but they did not succeed. Finally, Prof. Balamohandas has decided to improve facilities at the existing guesthouses and expand the number of rooms available for visiting guests. “The department of MTTM will take over the two guesthouses on the campus and the entire housekeeping taken care of by the students. In addition to 18 rooms in these guesthouses, another six quarters will also be converted into guest rooms with quality service,” he said. Practical experienceFurthering university’s ‘Earn While you Learn’ scheme, the income from the nominal fee to be charged at the guesthouses would be kept by the department in a separate fund and students providing service would be paid some amount to encourage them to get first hand experience in housekeeping, travel desk, kitchen management etc. With Guntur and Krishna districts providing a variety of places as tourist destinations, it would provide good opportunity for students to arrange tours for visitors for various conferences and other sporting events on campus, he opined. Once some of the quarters are put to such use, some staff might think in terms of shifting to the campus.
