BRIMMING: A view of the Periyar dam. THENI: The Periyar dam surplussed, as the storage level crossed 136 feet, the total permissible level on Monday night. Ninety-three cusecs of surplus water from the dam started overflowing to Idukki district through 13-vent spillway. The water level stood at 136.1 feet. The inflow to the dam has been scaled up marginally to 2,905 cusecs from 2,282 cusecs on Sunday night. The discharge from the dam was 1,789 cusecs, including 1,226 cusecs through the Iraichal Bridge and rest through three giant pipes for power generation at Lower Camp at Goodalur. The third and final flood warning was issued last night to alert people in down stream areas in Kerala. Massive efforts were on to draw more water from the dam and to scale down surplus flow through the spillway. “We have drawn 17.5 tmc so far,” said S. Rajesh, Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu PWD. Strangely, the dam surplussed when the level crossed 135.6 feet. Quantum of surplus increased to 93 cusecs on Tuesday morning from 33 cusecs on Monday night. The water level had crossed 136-foot mark on November 14 last year and the surplus water had been drained through vents till November 27. Water level shot up to 138 feet and the entire excess storage was drained to sea. The PWD had drawn 25 tmc of water last year. A total of 1,544 mcft of additional water, one-fourth of storage that Tamil Nadu was desperate to store in Periyar dam by raising the reservoir height to 142 feet, had surplussed into Kerala side within a week in November last. Vaigai damThe water level in the Vagai dam has been steadily increasing, thanks to comfortable flow in Kottakudi, Vaigai and Mulla Periyar rivers. The inflow was scaled down to 2,959 cusecs from 3,708 cusecs on Sunday. Public Works Department officials stepped up discharge to 1,041 cusecs from 241 cusecs to irrigate crops in Dindigul and Madurai districts, where turn system was introduced. RainfallThe amount of rainfall recorded in mm was: Periyar dam 23, Thekkadi 11, Goodalur 3, Shanmuga River dam 5 and Veerapandi 3. There was no rain in Uthamapalayam and Vaigai dam.
