Traffic woes continue to irk Tirupattur residents

Staff Reporter

“No concerted efforts by Highways Department to widen roads”

Encroachments yet to be cleared

Cutting down trees will worsen water problem

TIRUPATTUR: Though steps are being taken to make Tirupattur a traffic-free taluk headquarters, no concerted efforts have been made by the Highways Department to widen the major arterial roads, residents alleged.

The department has cut down trees in a taluk headquarters that continued to be parched. Monsoon had failed in Tirupattur often and the felling of trees would worsen the situation. People were getting water only once in five days, they added. The department was cutting the trees, claiming that it would help in widening the Krishnagiri Main Road, the most congested route in Tirupattur.

But no concerted efforts have been made by the department and the municipality to clear encroachments, the residents said.

Sub-Collector Ashish Kumar should hold a meeting with the Tirupattur Municipality to clear all encroachments, they said.

The Highways Department said that they were felling trees to help the Electricity Board change the power lines. Tirupattur was facing frequent power cuts, the residents added.

Frequent power failure on the Krishnagiri Main Road affected several business establishments.

Residents alleged that the Electricity Board was using the Highways Department’s work as a shield against consumers’ complaints.

The Highways Department should clearly state when some of the main arterial roads will be widened as the issue had been pending for more then a year, they said.

The Highways Department has said that the work on widening on the Krishnagiri Main Road would begin in a month.
