Mixed response to strike call

Staff Reporter

Strike scene: Government staff owing allegiance to the Left Democratic Front taking out a march in Malappuram on Tuesday after striking work in protest against the Union government’s policies.

MALAPPURAM: The strike call by the Left unions of employees on Tuesday evoked mixed response in the district. Staff organisations owing allegiance to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) said the strike against the Union government’s policies was total and a success in the district.

However, their rival groups such as the Kerala School Teachers Union said most teachers rejected the strike call.

Several offices at the Civil Station remained empty as many employees kept away from work. The offices of the RDO, District Registrar, Cooperative Joint Registrar, PWD Buildings Division, District Panchayat, Deputy Director of Panchayat, Principal Agricultural Officer, Kudumbasree District Mission and District Insurance did not function on Tuesday.

As many as 139 of 179 employees at the District Collectorate boycotted work, while 50 of the 60 employees kept away from duty at the District Police Office. Hardly 10 of the 104 employees at the Deputy Director of Education’s office turned up for work on Tuesday.

Offices affected

Staff Reporter writes from Kannur:

The one-day strike by pro-Left State and Union government employees and teachers’ organisations on Tuesday hit functioning of government offices here.

A majority of the staff in government offices participated in the strike. Some government offices remained closed as most of the employees joined the strike. The strike also affected the functioning of various schools in the district.

Striking government employees and teachers staged a demonstration here in the morning.
