NREGA applicants to get allowance in KBK region

KORAPUT: It was for the first time ever in the KBK region that the State Government would be giving unemployed allowance to job seekers for failing to provide jobs within the scheduled period of 15 days from the date of receipt of application under NREGA in Tentulikhunti block of Nowrangpur district . The block administration had assured the 62 applicants that they would be given the allowance on Friday , Sadan Muduli , an agitating labourer from Dangasil village said .

Persistent attempts to avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme by the villagers of Khandiaguda and Dangasil villages in the panchayat had forced the officials to respond, Prafulla Muduli, a leader of the labourers from Khandiaguda said.

According to Jagar Jani a labourer from Khandiaguda , 62 persons from these two villages had applied for work under the NREGA scheme on October 7. But failing to get any work from the administration during the promised period, these villagers had approached the block administration on October 23 asking for compensation on the basis of provisions made under the Act, he added.

While the officials had tried to skip the situation by giving reasons like the Puja vacation and the absence of the BDO for their failure to give jobs under the scheme, the determined villagers were not in a mood to move from the place, forcing officials from the district headquarter to intervene.

This victory of the villagers to exercise their rights in the remote village would go a long way in guiding NREGA implementation in the State , Pravakar Adhikari, a social worker from Koraput said.
