Meeting condemns attack on four

CPI(M) workers

Several houses in Azhiyoor searched for weapons

KOZHIKODE: An all-party meeting was held at the Azhiyoor grama panchayat, near Vadakara, here on Tuesday to restore peace in the area after clashes between activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday.

The meeting condemned the attack on four CPI(M) workers. The Vadakara police had arrested three BJP workers in connection with the incident. They were remanded to judicial custody for two weeks.

Azhiyoor grama panchayat president A.T. Sreedharan; Vadakara block panchayat president E.M. Dayanandan; and Vadakara Circle Inspector Jaison K. Abraham attended the meeting.

Raids conducted

The police conducted raids in Azhiyoor and adjoining areas on Monday and Tuesday. Several houses were searched for weapons.

The police said several of the accused in the attack on the CPI(M) workers were at large.

Eight persons have been named in the first information report.

The four CPI(M) workers were attacked on Sunday night, allegedly by RSS-BJP workers.

The injured were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College and Vadakara Cooperative Hospital.

A few days ago, a group of persons had attacked the house of Karshaka Morcha State secretary P.M. Ashokan. The Edacheri police had registered a case against 10 CPI(M) workers in connection with the incident.
