Beneficiaries have borrowed from moneylenders They say they are being harassed to repay loans DAVANGERE: A large number of people from Sri Rama Colony, who have been allotted Ashraya sites, gheraoed Commissioner of the Davangere City Corporation Pranalinga Shivasali here on Tuesday demanding that money be released for the completion of their half-built houses. The protesters, most of whom were women, said they had borrowed money from private financiers to build their houses, promising to return the money once the Government released funds. The private financiers were constantly harassing them to repay their loans, they said. Many of them complained that their husbands, unable to withstand such harassment, were in hiding. The corporation had retained the title deeds to their houses as a result of which they were unable to take loans from nationalised banks. Mr. Shivasali told The Hindu that the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation released money in four stages. The beneficiaries were to be given the first instalment after laying the foundation. The second instalment was to be released once the walls were built. The third instalment would be given only after the roofs were constructed, he said. He said two instalments had already been given to the beneficiaries, who were now awaiting the third and fourth instalments. ‘Cheques prepared’Displaying two cheque books, he said he had already prepared cheques in the names of the beneficiaries and was awaiting the release of funds.
