DAVANGERE: Members of the Davangere District Development Advisory Committee, led by its president M.S.K. Shastry, took out a procession here on Tuesday. They wanted the State Government to set up a university here to cater to the needs of students of Davangere, Bellary, Chitradurga, and Haveri districts. They submitted a memorandum to the City Corporation Commissioner, in which they said students of the districts had to travel long distances to attend college. The former Chief Minister J.H. Patel had mooted the idea of setting up a university in Davangere, they said, adding that the proposal had been buried. The former Governor T.N. Chaturvedi had showed keen interest in establishing a university here, but could not do so before his term ended. There are 15 government colleges and 25 private colleges in Davangere, while Chitradurga has 19 government and 31 private colleges. Over 80,000 students are studying in these institutions.
