PANAJI: Over five lakh voters of south Goa parliamentary constituency will exercise their franchise on Wednesday to elect their MP in a byelection that witnessed little enthusiasm from the electorate during a lacklustre campaign. The ruling Congress candidate, Francisco Sardinha, is expected to have an edge over his immediate rival, Wilfred Mesquita of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in this constituency, which is considered a Congress bastion. The indifference of the electorate and surreptitious anti-Congress work of some Congress leaders and alliance partners may work to the detriment of the Mr. Sardinha, who is also Pradesh Congress president. His public posturing in favour of the Congress notwithstanding, Save Goa Front (SGF) chief and Minister for Public Works Churchill Alemao is believed to have done hardly any election work for the Congress candidate. With the Congress giving enough hints that it is unwilling to pursue the disqualification petitions against two MGP MLAs, the MGP has responded openly by backing the Congress candidate.
