NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to request a Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry into the Ayurvedic medicine scam unearthed in its hospitals. At a meeting of the civic body’s House on Tuesday, both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party members passed the buck regarding discrepancy in purchase of Ayurvedic medicines for MCD-run hospitals. While demanding a “thorough CBI probe” into the issue, Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma said: “There has been a big scam in procuring Ayurvedic medicines. If found guilty, offenders from any party should be severely punished.” After a heated discussion on the matter, Mayor Arti Mehra decided that in all likelihood a CBI enquiry would be conducted. MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta apprised House members of his recent visit to Bangalore to study its garbage collection system. “There is mismanagement of garbage in the Capital. It is not lifted regularly and the collection process reeks of corruption.” MismanagementThe Chairman said contractors cited botched “tipping fees” and even MCD workers indulged in diesel theft from garbage collection vehicles. The process to revamp the garbage collection system in the Capital would be expedited and the new scheme will be initially implemented in two or three zones. While sympathising with the late Deputy Mayor S. S. Bajwa, several councillors raised concern about the increasing monkey menace in the city. Vivek Vihar councillor Preeti said she had witnessed a monkey bite off a child’s ear during her election campaign earlier this year and since then the scenario “has only grown worse”.
