Kodagu bandh on November 1

Special Correspondent

Protest against approach to Jamma land issue

Senior bureaucrat blamed for the situation

BANGALORE: Demanding the abolition of the Jamdar Committee that had been dealing with Jamma lands in Kodagu district, the Kodagu Asthithwa Horata Samiti has decided to observe Kodagu bandh and boycott the Rajyotsava on November 1, the day on which the valediction of the Suvarna Karnataka is to be celebrated throughout the State.

The former Minister M.C. Nanaiah, the former MLA A. K. Subbaiah, MLC Arun Macahaiah and M.N. Belliyappa of the committee told presspersons here on Tuesday that the deceptive and unscientific approach and attitude of the committee in handling the Jamma land issue was detrimental to the people of Kodagu. It would disturb social harmony and peace if the committee was not abolished immediately.

Holding a senior bureaucrat, who was with the Department of Revenue, responsible for the situation, Mr. Nanaiah and Mr. Subbiah said the bureaucrat in question had exhibited the audacity to ignore the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswmy’s promise to the Legislative Assembly.

While replying to a discussion on the circulars and their far reaching and dangerous effects on the people of Kodagu, Mr. Kumaraswamy had promised the House that the Government would withdraw the circulars immediately. He had instructed those concerned to carry out his instructions without causing delay. Although the circulars were withdrawn unconditionally, the committee had been conducting itself in an autocratic manner. The Government should know that people of the district were against the committee, they said.

All political parties, leaders, religious and educational institutions, trade union bodies, private transports such as taxi, autorickshaw and bus and business establishments had extended their support for the cause of Kodagu. All public activities in the district would come to a standstill on November 1. The committee had deliberately chosen that auspicious day to express the solidarity of the people of the district. Despite being aware of the adverse consequences, vested interests in the State administration had been imposing measures such as Greater Talacauvery project.

Kodagu had been subjected to constant suffering and misery by such anti-people measures. The committee would urge Governor Rameshwar Thakur to initiate disciplinary action against the senior bureaucrat, they said.

Seeking the support of intellectuals, writers, and Kannada organisations for the cause of Kodagu, they said that Kodagu and its people always stood for the cause of Kannada.
