Coffee export touches record high
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: A record 2.49 lakh tonnes of coffee exports, worth Rs. 2,008 crore of foreign exchange, was achieved during 2006-07, said the Coffee Board Chairman G.V. Krishna Rau on Tuesday.
Announcing this at a function to honour the top coffee exporters for the year 2006-07, Mr. Rau said that the exports of the previous best performance for a financial year was in 2000-01, when 2.47 lakh tonnes of coffee was exported.
He said that the domestic coffee prices saw improvement over the previous year. It was 10 per cent in the case of Plantation A (Rs.113 a kg in 2006-07 as compared to Rs.103 a kg in 2005-06) and 13 per cent up in the case of Robusta Cherry AB (Rs. 65 a kg in 2006-07 as compared to Rs. 57.90 last year).
In the current year also, while the Plantation A prices have remained at around Rs. 113 a kg, the Robusta Cherry AB prices have moved up to Rs.75 a kg.
This rise has more or less compensated the negative impact of the dollar depreciation, he said.
The Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh presented awards to the winners of the 6th edition of Flavour of India – The Fine Cup competition in Robusta category, and certificates to the sixth batch of students of the postgraduate diploma in coffee quality management.
