Workers union opposes move to privatise Bal Bhavan

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Jawaharlal Bal Bhavan Workers Union (KSJBBWU) has opposed the Bal Bhavan administration’s move towards privatisation, saying that it was against the interest of poor children.

Referring to the Department of Women and Child Development’s call for tender notification for installation and maintenance of the road toy train and other amusement installations as well as providing education and co-curricular activities at Jayanagar, Jeevan Bima Nagar, Coles Park and Rajajinagar Mini Bal Bhavan, KSJBBWU president G.R. Shivashankar told presspersons here on Tuesday that there was no dearth of government funds for improvement of facilities. Moreover, some private organisations are voluntarily investing in Bal Bhavans.

‘Profit is the motive’

He said the privatisation move would deprive poor children of a quality outing as profit would be the main motive.

Also drawing, painting camps for children during summer would be affected.

There are 52 employees working in Bal Bhavans and they would also be put to hardship.

He said, now the Bal Bhavan is headed by the chairman, Department of Women and Child Welfare, whereas in Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry and in New Delhi, the Bal Bhavans are headed by the Education Department and Human Resource Department.

He urged the Governor to shift the Bal Bhavan under Education Department, it would be in the interest of the general public and poorer sections of society.

K.C. Venkatesh, State convenor of SAFE-K, said they would be taking out a rally of 5,000 children to Raj Bhavan to “Save Bal Bhavan” from privatisation.
