Bangalore: Sericulture development will be a priority area in the 11th Plan with an overall outlay of Rs. 2,015 crore. Central Silk Board will get a share of Rs. 940 crore in this. Announcing this at the inauguration of a workshop on commercial chawki rearing centres, S.B. Dandin, Director of the National Silkworm Seed Organisation, said that 50,000 more acres of land will be brought under mulberry cultivation during the 11th Plan. Speaking about chawki rearing centres, where silkworms are reared under protected conditions in their early stage, he said the board hopes to have 1,000 such units by the end of the 11th Plan, 50 per cent of which will be in the State. These centres, he added, not only ensure supply of nutritious leaves but also maintain the required temperature, humidity and hygiene. This results in disease-free, robust silkworms. This ensures that farmers enjoy crop stability and good yield with less risk, he added. The centres also doubled as technology transfer units, where farmers get advice and help on improving cultivation, said Mr. Dandin. The 11th Plan laid a special thrust on gender equity on sericulture farming, he added.
