CHAMARAJANAGAR: State president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha Kodihalli Chandrashekar has said that a committee representing district farmers has called off its agitation in view of the assurance given by the district in-charge secretary to address their problems. Addressing farmers in front of the district office complex here after a meeting, Mr. Chandrashekar said that the agitation, launched nine days ago, has been withdrawn. He said the sugar director would attend a meeting of farmers and sugar factory management at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to be convened on November 2. KRRS meetingMysore Staff Correspondent writes: The farmers had launched the indefinite agitation to bring pressure to bear on the Government seeking fulfilment of their demands. According to Mr. Chandrashekar, the sangha has convened a meeting of its State committee on November 5 and November 6 to discuss the future course of action, including launching a State-wide agitation to draw the attention of the Government to the problems being faced by farmers, especially those from Chamarajanagar, because of the delay in fixing the minimum support price for agriculture produce. Despite being aware of the fact that the district administration had no role in fulfilling their demands, they had made the district administration office of Chamarajanagar their home during the agitation. Though Deputy Commissioner, Vishwanath Reddy, had promised that he will apprise the Chief Secretary of their demands, the farmers were reluctant to withdraw the dharna. When contacted, Mr. Vishwanath Reddy said that only a policy decision could help solve the farmers’ problems. The district administration had no power to address them, he added. Secretaries, Principal Secretaries of the departments concerned and Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi have been apprised of the demands of the farmers, he said. “We have asked the farmers to withdraw the agitation in view of the inconvenience being caused to the public. However, they are not relenting,” he said. Asked about farmers creating a law and order problem, he said that the district administration was prepared to meet any exigency.
