They were stopped from going to the Raj Bhavan Governor meets them and accepts memorandum BANGALORE: Sugarcane farmers from across the State on Monday took out a rally here to highlight their problems and seeking implementation of their demands. Farmers, who were representing 22 districts congregated at the Bangalore City Railway Station and took out the rally to the Raj Bhavan where they planned to hand over a memorandum to the Governor Rameshwar Thakur. However, they were stopped near the West Gate of Vidhana Soudha where they staged a dharna. Governor Rameshwar Thakur arrived at the spot to receive the memorandum that contained a list of 14 demands and promised to convene a meeting of farmers and sugar factory owners. “The Governor has promised to convene a meeting involving the farmers’ representatives, sugar factory owners and officials within the next three days,” said State president of Sugarcane Growers Association Kurubur Shanthkumar. He said that the Governor spoke to the Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar soon after hearing the problems of the sugarcane growers. The demand of sugarcane growers included a fixation of scientific price for 2007-2008 and release of all dues from the factories to the farmers besides extension of financial assistance to jaggery units. Seeking amendments to the Sugarcane and Sugar Control Act, 1966, the farmers have demanded increased compensation to those farmers who lose their crop due to attacks of wild animals.
