AIMSS to hold meeting in Mysore in January

Staff Correspondent

It will focus on issues concerning women

MYSORE: All India Mahila Samskruthika Sanghatane (AIMSS) will hold its three-day State-level convention from January 4 at the Town Hall in Mysore.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Tuesday, State AIMSS secretary Aparna B.R. said that the convention would urge the authorities concerned to ensure education, employment and security to women.

Various committees had been formed to conduct the convention. Science writer J.R. Lakshman Rao had been made the chairperson of the reception committee, she added.

As part of the convention, it had been decided to conduct seminars and workshops focussing on issues concerning women at vaious educational institutions in and around Mysore. More than 5,000 delegates from various parts of the State were expected to participate in the convention, she said.

AIMSS was creating confidence in women and fighting for their cause. Despite making foray into various specialised fields, women were being exploited in various forms, she alleged.

They were victims of rape, acid attack and sexual harassment at workplaces, she said. Women featured as “marketing commodity” in videos, television programmes, mobile and internet services, she said.

Though the governments claimed that they had concern for women, there was no change in the condition of women in society.

There were only 10 government women first grade colleges in the State and the number of pre-university colleges was not enough to meet the increasing demand.

It was necessary for women to get employment to be self-dependent.

But it was an irony that only 6 per cent of women were working in both the organised and the unorganised sectors, she said.

Cases of female infanticide and foeticide had been increasing in the recent days and the authorities concerned were not taking any action to contain them.

The convention would discuss these issues and try to find solutions to them.

An open session would be held on January 4 and a delegates’ session on January 5 and January 6, she said.
