BANGALORE: A two-member team from Sri Aurobindo PU College, Shimoga, — Nithish B. and Rajath V.S. — emerged winners of the eighth edition of the Rural IT Quiz organised as part of bangaloreIT.in. The second place was secured by Meryl Likhita Lewis and Anushree N. of Little Rock, Udupi, while Kriti Y.C. and Sneha V. of Carmel Convent, Mandya, secured the third place. The Rural IT quiz was organised by the Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology, Science and Technology, in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services. The quiz set a new record with over 12 lakh students from classes 8 to 12 participating this year. Speaking to The Hindu after winning the quiz, Rajath said, “I still cannot believe we have made it. We have been trying to win this quiz for the past three years.” Nithish said, “We knew the kind of questions that would be asked. We have been preparing for this for a long time. We have examinations going on right now. We have come here after getting special permission from our principal.” Runners-up Meryl and Anushree said their brothers were former finalists. “We had heard about the quiz from them. We wanted to show that we could clinch it,” said Meryl. “We came with the agenda of ensuring that people remember us one way or the other. I think we have achieved that,” said Anushree. Krithi and Sneha said they had earlier been finalists in the quiz two years ago. “We hope to join the same college next year and compete together and win this quiz,” said Sneha, 10th standard student. The State champions this year won a trophy, a cash scholarship of Rs. 70,000, digital cameras, digital diaries and watches. The first and second runners-up also received trophies and scholarships of Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 20,000, respectively. All finalists were given a book, “Sand to Silicon” written by Shivanand Kanavi, TCS vice-president, and digital diaries. This year the quiz was conducted in four phases. The first round was conducted on September 10, followed by the district round on September 24. The quiz gathered momentum in October with the top 50 teams from each district participating in the regional finals conducted in Gulbarga, Dharwad, Davangere, Tumkur, Hassan and Udupi from October 15 to October 24. Six teams qualified for the State finals. The participants included Zeeshan Ali and Sachin Rathod from Sainik School, Bijapur, Vinay Kumar M. Kolli and Ganesh R.
