Rain brings copious water to Tirumala dams

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: The copious rain that the Tirumala hill station received under the influence of a depression in the Bay of Bengal has made the water level in the Papavinasanam dam at Tirumala touch the 4,275-lakh-gallon mark against its full storage capacity (FSC) of 5,240 lakh gallons.

Similarly, the fresh discharge has taken the water level in the Gogarbham dam to 1,842 lakh gallons against its FSC of 2,833 lakh gallons.

The two dams are also expected to be up to their brim in the next two days given the heavy inflow from the upper reaches.

Rare spectacle

Akasa Ganga, the other dam on the hills with a 685-lakh-gallon capacity is already overflowing, a rare spectacle in the recent years -- thanks to the torrential rain that lashed the Tirumala hill ranges leaving, however, a trail of devastation in the four districts.

Meanwhile, the TTD’s Chief Engineer V.S.B. Koteswara Rao, accompanied by his team of other engineers, on Tuesday, inspected the pace of work at the ‘twin projects’ of Kumaradhara and Pasupudhara which have a combined capacity of 5,250 lakh gallons.

He told media persons that the work on the projects which got off to a start in 2005 would be over by 2008, comprehensively addressing the drinking water problem of Tirumala which is witnessing a steep increase in its pilgrim influx.

TTD’s Executive Engineers Manohar, Jagadeeswara Reddy, Sudhakar, Deputy Executive Engineers and Assistant Engineers formed part of the inspecting team.
