Corrections and clarifications

  • A report “BJP, JD(S) parade legislators” (October 30, 2007, page 1) gave the name of the Karnataka BJP leader as B.S. Yeddyurappa

A New Delhi report, “BJP, Congress trade charges” and the caption of the accompanying PTI photograph (October 30, 2007) gave it as B.S. Yediyurappa. The BJP leader has changed his name from B.S. Yediyurappa to B.S. Yeddyurappa.

  • The caption of the accompanying PTI photograph in a PTI report “It’s a ‘treasure for mankind’ says Sonia” (October 29, 2007) was: “Eighth Wonder: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma and diplomat Karan Singh at the Terracotta Warrior Mausoleum in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi province on Sunday.” A reader says that it should have been the Grand Mosque of Xi’an, which also Sonia Gandhi visited, as mentioned in the report. PTI clarifies that the reader is right. The error crept in at the editing stage (at PTI).

  • With reference to an article “Indexing inhumanity, Indian style” (Editorial page, October 26, 2007), a reader says that the writer P. Sainath mentions in the third paragraph that “Ethiopia ranks a notch above us at 93.” But in a report “The challenge of hunger — 2007”, with an introduction written by Prof. Joachim von Braun, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Ethiopia was ranked 114, while Zimbabwe was ranked 93. P. Sainath clarifies that Ethiopia did manage its hunger better than us (as the reader points out). The FAO, covering the period 1995-97 and 2000-02, shows us that the numbers of the hungry in India went up in those years from 203 million to 221.1 million. In the same period, the numbers in Ethiopia fell from 35.8 to 31.3 million (Quick reference chart in the Times of India, December 11, 2004). On the GHI ranking, the story quotes (with attribution) the DNA daily newspaper, which placed Ethiopia “just ahead of India.” Which in terms of improvement, it is. But rank 93 belongs to Zimbabwe (in hyperinflation and facing possible food riots), not Ethiopia which is below India.

  • A tennis report “Fabrice Santoro ousts Andy Roddick” (“Sport”, October 26, 2007) incorrectly mentioned in the results column that Christophe Rochus beat Mardy Fish. It was Olivier Rochus who defeated Fish in the second round. Christophe Rochus was beaten by Richard Gasquet in the first round. (The report was on the Lyon Grand Prix tournament.)

  • A report “Sudha Singh creates National record” (“Sport”, October 26, 2007) said that Sudha Singh of the Railways bettered the previous record in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase event by nearly 26 minutes. It was an error and should have been 26 seconds. (The report was on the 47th Open National athletic championship at Jamshedpur.)
