Cisco opens globalisation centre

BANGALORE: Cisco on Monday inaugurated its Globalisation Centre East campus near Bangalore, part of its overall $1.1 billion investment plans for India. Cisco’s Chairman and CEO, John Chambers, and former President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, were present. Mr. Chambers announced a $100 million venture investment for innovative technologies from India, with the help of Satyam Computers to select target recipients.

Dr. Kalam said “a creative leadership and sustained 10 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) growth can propel India into the major economies faster. Networking technology such as Cisco specialises in can make this happen more cost effectively, besides encouraging local youth with necessary skills.”

Mr. Chambers said, “I will feel disappointed if we grow below 30 per cent in this region over the next two or three years, considering the potential in the form of young workforce, existing partners such as Satyam and the geographical proximity of Bangalore to several growing markets. We expect the Bangalore centre not only support Cisco’s research and development work across other such centres, but eventually become the source for 20 per cent of our staff across all levels”.

The Bangalore campus now has 1,200 personnel and is scaled to grow further and the integrated campus has an initial investment of $50 million making it one of the largest in Asia-Pacific.

Satyam’s founder-Chairman, B. Ramalinga Raju, said the first joint initiative would be to extend an integrated public healthcare solution that would be network-centric and would narrow the gap between hospitals in the metros and other regions.
