NEW DELHI: German small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will set up common standards for Indian SMEs and will increase their presence in India, said Angela Merkel, Chancellor, Federal Republic of Germany, and President of the European Council. Addressing captains of Indian industry at a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and others here on Tuesday, she said Germany was looking forward to broadening its relationship with India, and infrastructure, military cooperation and development of financial institutes were the key areas of interest for investment. Noting that renewable and clean energy technology is a key area of concern for the European Union (EU) and Germany is willing to assist India with technology and investment to jointly foster clean energy solutions, the Chancellor said that vocational training for Indian manpower could be taken up by the German companies which were planning to set up businesses in India. Dr. Merkel said that Germany was willing to cooperate with India for the successful completion of the Doha Round and balance the issues related to agricultural subsidies, services and intellectual property rights. The Indo-German trade target of 10 billion euro set for 2010 had already been achieved, said Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry. He wanted the Indian industry to focus on bigger targets with a thrust on development of SMEs of both the countries.
