MDMK to observe fast at Pollachi

Staff Reporter

It will be led by General Secretary Vaiko on

November 1

Coimbatore: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) will observe a fast from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 1 (Thursday). It will be led by General Secretary Vaiko, who will wear a black shirt. A release from Rural and Urban District Secretaries R.T. Mariappan and R.R. Mohan Kumar said in the compromise formula that was worked out for the Salem division, 78 km in the Metre Gauge section between Palakkad–Pollachi and Kinathukkadavu (hitherto with Madurai Railway Division) was given away to the Palakkad division as a compensation for taking away Coimbatore and Tirupur areas for the new railway division at Salem.

To protest the decision, the MDMK had staged a rail roko on September 19 at Pollachi. Campaigns were held at various places in and around Pollachi and Kinathukkadavu for four days from September 25 and a public meeting was held on October 5.

A delegation of MDMK functionaries including C. Krishnan and Sippiparai A. Ravichandran met the Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on October 6 on the issue. The Railway Minister had informed the delegation that the suggestion was put forth by the Members of Parliament who attended the meeting convened for working out a compromise formula. The suggestion came only with the knowledge and concurrence of the Chief Minister, the release charged.

The Railway Minister also criticised the railway officials for not inviting the Pollachi MP for the meeting. Against this background, the MDMK accused the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of not having come out with any explanation.
