Office of the Electricity Consumer Advocate gets Cabinet approval
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet has agreed to the proposal to set up an Office of the Electricity Consumer Advocate that will give voice to the concerns of electricity consumers and protect their interests.
“The idea was mooted by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and it will be run by a team from consumer organisation VOICE headed by S. R. Khanna,” said Principal Secretary (Power) Rakesh Mehta on Monday.
The forum will hear the grievances of power consumers and represent them wherever the need arises.
“The Office of the Consumer Advocate will be run for an initial term of three years, which can be further extended by another three years. We will set aside a budget for its running, which will be set up in Jhandewalan,” Mr. Mehta said.
“At present we have no mechanism to help consumers’ fights against the power distribution companies or take up issues with the regulatory bodies. This forum should help consumers’ get a voice in decision making and issues like tariff determination, street-lighting and meter testing.”
