How to manage disasters?

Coimbatore: A three-day crash course on disaster management for officials of the City Police, corporation and Revenue Department began at Central Training College-II of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) here on Monday.

The college is designated as the nodal agency by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to conduct disaster management programmes, including Medical First Responder/Collapsed Structures Search and Rescue, and also for being the First Responder in Nuclear, Biological-Chemical Emergencies.

The training is being given under the supervision of the DIG and Principal of the CRPF, George C. Francis.

The Disaster Risk Management Programme of the Union Government and the United Nations Development Programme is a national initiative to reduce vulnerability of communities in the most multi-hazard prone districts of the country. There are 169 such districts in the country.

Earthquake prone

Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project is also the sub-component of Disaster Risks Management Programme being implemented in 38 cities in the coutry. Coimbatore is one among them. The district administration is the nodal agency for coordinating all related activities. Coimbatore falls under the zone-III of the seismicity map. With half a million people living in urban areas, the programme aims at strengthening the capacity of the community, institutions at all levels and reducing the vulnerability due to hazardous and consequential disasters.

The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan, inaugurated the training programme. He asked agencies concerned to be in a state of readiness always since disasters crop up suddenly. More than 35 personnel from the City Police and another 25 from Revenue Department and corporation attended the training programme.

Team formed

Mr.Gandhirajan said the City Police have formed a disaster management team consisting of nearly 300 personnel led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), P. Sugumaran.
