SIVAGANGA: The Thevars should vote out the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam that has “disrespected” freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said on Tuesday.

Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation for a 100-foot-high statue for Muthuramalinga Thevar on the occasion of his birth centenary at Poovanthi near here, she said her Government had allocated Rs. 3 crore for provision of amenities at Pasumpon, the birth place of the leader, to commemorate his birth centenary. But the DMK Government set aside only Rs. 50 lakh.

Thevar believed in nationalism and spirituality, whereas Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was “encouraging extremists” and “bomb culture.” Besides, he was “abusing Gods.”

The leader who did not believe in the principles of Thevar was visiting his memorial at Pasumpon only with an eye on forthcoming elections, she said. “He does not have the locus standi [to pay homage to Thevar].”

Ms. Jayalalithaa assured the Thevar community that she would strive for its welfare if she was voted back to power.

All-India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam founder N. Sethuraman, who organised the function, said it was befitting that a brave leader like Ms. Jayalalithaa was laying the foundation for the statue.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko was among the AIADMK-led alliance leaders who participated in the function.
