London: Rich tributes were paid to L.M. Singhvi, former High Commissioner of India to the U.K., who died in New Delhi early this month. At a memorial service held at the India House here, High Commissioner Kamalesh Sharma described Singhvi as a “multi-faceted personality,” who assisted in the writing of Constitutions of Bangladesh, Nepal and South Africa. “He was a constitutional expert, historian and scholar of philosophy,” Mr. Sharma said. Manick Dalal, chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, said: “Singhvi was a great writer, thinker and scholar and he did a wonderful job for the betterment of the India-U.K. relations during his tenure as High Commissioner between 1991 and 1997.” Member of the third Lok Sabha from 1962-67 and former Advocate-General of Rajasthan from 1972-77, Singhvi was conferred Padma Bhushan in 1998. Elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1999, he was the chairman of a high-level committee on Indian Diaspora. Stephen Pound, member of Parliament and Chairman of the Labour Friends of India, said Singhvi initially mooted the idea of setting up Labour Friends of India for providing a “voice” for Indian interests in the British Parliament. Singhvi was also a well-acknowledged scholar of the Jain history and culture. — PTI
